Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that he will resign as president of Serbia within a few weeks. Vucic made this statement during a rally organized by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, which took place in Belgrade on Saturday night.

His decision came in the wake of mass protests organized by students following the tragedy in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, where on November 1, 2024, the canopy of the recently renovated train station collapsed, killing 16 people.

The President said: "This is probably the last time I will address you as President of the Republic. I have served my country faithfully for 14 years. I love Serbia more than anything else in the world. I have never been interested in foreign interests. I have wanted to serve no one but the citizens of Serbia. They said I would never leave the presidency. These are my final days and weeks as President of the Republic."

Vucic accused the protesting students of refusing to have a dialogue with him and alleged that first, they were "a plaything in the hands of politicians, then in the hands of others".
