Global index provider MSCI has announced its decision to reclassify Bulgaria from Standalone Market status to Frontier Market status, the country's Financial Supervision Commission said in a press release on Wednesday. The decision is part of the MSCI 2026 Market Classification Review.

The reclassification marks an important step in the development of Bulgaria's capital market and reflects the sustained efforts of public institutions and market participants to improve market accessibility, infrastructure, and the country's investment environment, the regulator added.

MSCI said that the improvements in the accessibility and investability of the Bulgarian market have proven sustainable and significant enough to warrant its reclassification. Bulgaria will be formally included in MSCI's Frontier Markets indices in May 2027.

"This is a historic moment for the Bulgarian capital market. MSCI's decision sends a clear signal to the international investment community that Bulgaria is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for investment and that the reforms and efforts aimed at developing the market are delivering results. The reclassification has the potential to increase the international visibility of Bulgarian listed companies, attract new investors, and create additional opportunities for businesses to raise capital," Bulgarian Stock Exchange CEO Manyu Moravenov said.

The press release adds that MSCI's market classifications are among the most widely used benchmarks by international investors.

MSCI classifies markets into four categories: Developed Markets, Emerging Markets, Frontier Markets, and Standalone Markets. The reclassification means that, instead of being considered an isolated market excluded from the main global indices, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange will now be grouped with smaller and more specialized economies that have not yet met the size and liquidity requirements necessary for inclusion in the Emerging Markets category.
