The extension of Sofia's third metro line to the Slatina and Mladost boroughs is 45% complete, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said Tuesday following an inspection of the construction work at the Geo Milev metro station.

He emphasized that the project is progressing well and on schedule and that the six new metro stations are expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Three additional stations in the direction of Hadzhi Dimitar and Levski are scheduled to open in July 2026. Construction continues on the metro station in Obelya, which is expected to be completed in 2027. Planning and design work is underway for future extensions toward Studentski Grad borough and the intermodal transport hub in Simeonovo, with construction preparation expected to begin in 2027.

Terziev pointed out that the metro remains a strategic priority for Sofia and that the Municipality is working to secure funding, having already raised the issue with the new national government to ensure that the pace of metro expansion is maintained. Residents living near the new metro section should not be concerned about its proximity to residential buildings, Metropoliten CEO Nikolay Naydenov noted, adding that building safety and vibration levels are monitored through three separate control procedures.

Preliminary studies indicate that the new stations will serve more than 70,000 passengers daily. Once all planned lines are completed, daily metro ridership should exceed 600,000 passengers in Sofia.
