Targovishte Mayor Darin Dimitrov Wednesday issued an order prohibiting the harvesting of linden blossoms, the municipal press centre said.
Linden blossoms makes a herbal tea that is very popular in Bulgaria and people would harvest the blossoms for own use and for sale.
Harvesting now is prohibited both from plantations and from individual trees, which are considered municipal property, the order pointed out. Cutting, breaking branches and damaging trees, as well as harvesting linden pollen for sale are also prohibited.
The ban is enforced by the municipal park management and security authorities. In smaller settlements that are part of Targovishte Municipality, the local mayors are responsible for control, with assistance to be provided by the Targovishte Regional Police Department.
Violations of the ban carry a fine of EUR 50 to EUR 255 for individuals and EUR 510 to EUR 2,556 for legal entities.
