Borislav Sarafov’s resignation is not a reform, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday. “However, it is a clear sign that the entire ‘Sarafov clique’ in the judicial system realizes that the political forces that have propped it up for years are losing power. Borislav Sarafov is impossible without his political patrons. The model he represents is as well,” Demerdzhiev added.

Sarafov announced his resignation as National Investigative Service chief and deputy prosecutor general earlier on Wednesday. He asked to remain as rank-and-file prosecutor. The Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council later accepted the resignation.

According to Demerdzhiev, “the big task now is to eradicate this poison from the judicial system once and for all and not allow the dark forces to regroup.”

"When Sarafov replaced [former prosecutor general Ivan] Geshev, there was widespread applause, including from those who are now fiercely criticizing the former acting prosecutor general. Progressive Bulgaria does not want a change of names. We want real change,” he added.
