Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev wrote on Facebook that Bulgaria’s capital has the potential to become a driver of innovation in Europe. His comments came after a visit to the Institute of Molecular Biology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in connection with the construction of the new BioMedRTC research centre. Terziev described BioMedRTC as a strategic European-funded project in which Bulgarian science is partnering with two of the world’s most prestigious research institutions — Max Planck Society and Institut Curie.

According to the Sofia Mayor, the BioMedRTC project introduces two models that are fundamental to the modern scientific environment. The first is the creation of technological departments, or core facilities, providing advanced biomedical technologies and methods accessible to researchers and clinicians from across Bulgaria and abroad. The second is the establishment of research groups led by young and independent scientists, reflecting the belief that the future belongs to capable and knowledgeable people.

Terziev explained that the role of Sofia Municipality in the process was to assist in the preparation and approval of the Detailed Development Plan for the building. While many people may view this as merely administrative work, he stressed that such planning is in fact the key that enables the implementation of projects of national importance. When urban planning works in support of science, the city develops in the right direction, he added.

According to Terziev, Sofia is already establishing itself among global leaders in climate policy and innovation. Through projects such as BioMedRTC, the Bulgarian capital is proving that it is a reliable partner and an attractive hub for investment in knowledge and research, he said.
