Uruguayan cyclist Guillermo Thomas Silva pulled off a surprise victory in Stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia, crossing the finish line of the demanding 221-kilometre route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo in 5 hours, 39 minutes and 25 seconds.

The Uruguayan was part of the peloton that entered Veliko Tarnovo trailing the three-man breakaway of Jonas Vingegaard, Giulio Pellizzari and Lennert Van Eetvelt by 24 seconds. However, the main group reeled in the leaders on the city streets of Veliko Tarnovo before the finish. In the final 500-metre sprint, Silva edged out Germany’s Florian Stork and Italy’s Giulio Ciccone to seal an unexpected win.

The stage was marred by a major crash involving at least 13 riders, 22 kilometres from the finish. Wet roads, sharp elevation changes and a brief lapse in concentration are believed to have contributed to the incident. Among those caught up in the crash were Canadian rider Derek Gee, British contender Adam Yates and Portuguese cyclist António Morgado, who had been considered one of the favourites ahead of Friday’s start of the Giro. Racing resumed with approximately 18 kilometres remaining.

Earlier in the stage, Diego Sevilla of Polti VisitMalta won the intermediate sprint in Sliven, southeastern Bulgaria, ahead of teammate Mirco Maestri.

Stage 2 of the Giro D'Italia crossed Bulgaria from south to north, running through mountain terrain and medieval capitals.
