Teodora Nikolova, winner of the European Artist Award and participant in international exhibitions, is preparing her first one-artist show in Bulgaria. Her project, Infinity, combining painting, sculpture and installation, will be presented at Vivacom Art Hall in Sofia from May 8-23. The official opening will take place on May 8 at 6:30pm and will include special lighting and set design and a performance by ballet dancers from the National Opera and Ballet, the hosts said on Wednesday.
The theme of infinity – "beyond form, beyond frame and beyond perception" – was inspired by the universe and its endless star fields. Nikolova examines the sense of scale and the unknown through visual structures such as fractals, spirals and repeating forms, similar to the Mobius strip, a symbol of cyclicality in which time returns but is never the same. The artist constructs a visual world in which natural cycles, from day and night to birth and death, intertwine. She seeks out human states such as love, consciousness, memory and trauma, which remain beyond the reach of time, the project team says.
Among the highlights of the exhibition are sculptural installations featuring ballet pointe shoes placed on mirrored surfaces, and spatial compositions made of aluminium and mesh, combined with lighting design and mapping.
The show will raise funds for a programme for talented young people at risk and will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of a specially selected artwork to the cause.
A supporting event titled Art Dialogue will take place on May 23. It will involve a lecture and a workshop dedicated to contemporary art, art psychology and photography, featuring guest speakers and a live demonstration by the artist.
