A forum on Friday marked the third anniversary of the Bulgarian Agrarian Chamber.
Addressing the forum, Bulgarian Agrarian Chamber President Iliya Prodanov said: "The sector has gone through crises, market disruptions, changes in European policies and internal challenges, all of which have clearly shown that Bulgarian agriculture needs a strong, unified and clear voice."
Prodanov stressed that Bulgarian agriculture needs predictability, a stable regulatory environment and fair market conditions and that European agriculture can no longer be an island of high costs on a global scale.
Without a strong agricultural sector, achieving solid economic development is not possible, said Vladimir Ivanov, Chair of the Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets State Commission.
According to Ivanov, there is no developed economy in the world that does not have a developed agricultural sector, and it is an illusion that a good economy can be developed without an agricultural sector. He said that Bulgaria has enormous potential in this area, and the agricultural sector is where real added value is created.
Caretaker Minister of Agriculture and Food Ivan Hristanov voiced concern with the EU Common Agricultural Policy for the next period serious concerns. "The first is the budget. It has been reduced by 20%, which is far too much for our conditions. Another issue is the timeframes under discussion for investment measures.”
He also noted that convergence has always been a major topic – what the rates are and who receives what in other countries. "It is high time to achieve equalization of support," the Agriculture Minister said.
