site.btaUPDATED Ikar Awards Presented on World Theatre Day
The 52nd Ikar Awards were presented on Friday evening, World Theatre Day, by the Union of Artists in Bulgaria at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia.
This year's motto, "To Love in Spite", was inspired by the 80th anniversary of the birth of director Nikolay Volev (1946-2024).
President Iliana Iotova, who attended the ceremony, said in her speech that she was very excited, describing theatre as the highest form of art. She wished artists to continue striving for excellence and to pursue the meaningful and inspiring "flight" of theatrical art.
Iotova presented the Union of Artists in Bulgaria with the Honorary Sign of the President to mark the 170th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian chitalishte (community centre) movement, as well as in recognition of the Union's significant contribution to the development of Bulgarian theatre and performing arts.
Among the first announced winners, Veselin Marinov received the Icarus Award for entertainment and stage arts for his contribution to promoting Bulgarian musical culture.
Nencho Ilchev was awarded in the circus arts category for his contribution to the development and popularization of illusion art and for founding the Museum of Magic.
The Act-Unima award for significant contribution to Bulgarian puppetry was presented to Prof. Doychina Sinigerska, while Prof. Bonyo Lungov received the award for pedagogical achievement.
Assoc. Prof. Maria Dimanova was honoured with the Icarus Award for honour and dignity, and Aneta Sotirova received the award for outstanding contribution to Bulgarian theatre.
The variety arts award went to Jordan Yanev-Zain for his contribution to the field.
