Hydromassage tubs with underwater jet massage for recovery and treatment using mineral water are available at the Calista SPA Hotel in the resort village of Starozagorski bani, Diana Vlaykova, manager of the hotel’s SPA centre, told BTA.

Since the beginning of the year, the SPA centre has been visited by over 2,000 people, a significant portion of whom are foreign tourists. The procedure is applied to people with musculoskeletal problems. The facility is located on the southern slope of the Sredna Gora mountains, near a natural mineral spring. The water has a high content of calcium and magnesium, with mild mineralization and a neutral reaction, making it suitable for therapeutic and restorative purposes.

The underwater jet massage combines the mechanical and chemical effects of mineral water. The pressure is adjusted according to the patient’s needs, producing either a toning or relaxing effect. The massage is performed from the extremities toward the body.

The SPA and wellness centre covers an area of 6,000 sq m and is equipped with modern facilities. Therapists trained at the International SPA Academy in Bali work at the center. Visitors can take advantage of treatments for detoxification, improving circulation and metabolism, as well as skincare therapies.

The centre offers individualized programs in kinesiotherapy and therapeutic exercise for conditions such as coxarthrosis, discopathy, and herniated discs. Electrotherapy treatments with various types of current - direct, galvanic, and alternating - are also available, along with magnetotherapy, which provides anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

Among the services offered is peloid therapy, in which compresses with mineral mud are used to relieve pain in the lower back, knees, shoulder joints, and arms.

The hotel reports high occupancy throughout the year, with regular guests including tourists from Romania, Greece, and France. According to the management, this interest is due both to the natural resources of the area and to the variety of services and quality of care provided.

Calista SPA Hotel is listed in the register of certified SPA and wellness centers maintained by the Ministry of Tourism. The facility includes an indoor mineral pool and a children’s pool, an ice pool, various types of saunas, steam baths, a laconium, a relaxation area, and a Turkish bath.

The center also offers Asian massages, hammam rituals, body and facial therapies, as well as restorative and rehabilitation programs.

BTA presents news from certified SPA, wellness, and medical SPA centres in Bulgaria in its BG SPA: Salus per aquam, Health Through Water feature. Their total number exceeds 200. The initiative, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and SPA Tourism, is linked to Europe’s leading health tourism event, the HEALTHXCHANGE SUMMIT, which will be held from May 11 to 13, 2026, in Varna, Sts. Constantine and Helena, Golden Sands, and Albena. BTA will be the event’s main media partner.
