The Serbian government has reduced excise duties on petroleum derivatives by 20%, in response to global disruptions in petroleum supplies caused by escalating tensions in the Middle East, Serbian national broadcaster RTS reported on Friday.

This means that the excise tax on diesel, which is currently RSD 74.04 (EUR 0.63) per litre, will be reduced to RSD 59.23 (EUR 0.50) per litre and the excise tax on gasoline, which is currently RSD 72 (EUR 0.61), will be reduced to RSD 57.6 (EUR 0.49 euros) per litre.

The decision is in effect from March 13 until April 15, 2026.

Fuel prices in Serbia have been regulated by the state for years, with the government most recently extending the Decree on Limiting the Price of Petroleum Products for 60 days on January 24. Under the regulation, the maximum retail price, including VAT, for Eurodiesel and BMB 95 petrol is set based on the average wholesale price in Serbia, plus RSD 20 (EUR 0.17) per litre.

RTS reports that pending a new operating license for Serbia's only oil company, NIS, which has been under US sanctions since October 9, 2025, derivatives prices remain under control.

A ban on the export of oil and petroleum products is in effect until March 19, and the government has released butane, propane, and autogas from the state reserve.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced in an interview with RTS on Thursday that the state will supply oil companies with petroleum derivatives and will also reduce excise taxes on fuels by 20%. He stated that without government intervention, the price of diesel at gas stations would be 20% higher and stressed that this should not be allowed.

The Serbian President noted that citizens can be calm and that there will be no shortage of oil because reserves are enough for 93 days.

"We will not allow insane prices, we will protect our citizens," Vucic said to RTS.
