Romania's Supreme Council of National Defence discussed on Wednesday the temporary deployment of US refuelling aircraft, surveillance equipment, and satellite communication systems at the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base near Constanta, Southeastern Romania, in the context of the war in Iran, said Romanian President Nicusor Dan. He was speaking following the meeting, and his statement was broadcast live online.
Dan noted that the decision must be approved by Parliament and that a debate on the issue is scheduled for later in the day.
“The equipment is defensive. It is intended to enhance Romania’s security. I assure Romanians that there is no reason for concern. Their country is safe,” the President said. If the equipment is deployed in Romania, it will be done based on cooperation with the US, he noted, adding that "similar cooperation is carried out by other NATO countries as well”.
Dan reported that so far nearly 5,700 Romanians have been repatriated from the Middle East with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Today, the Council also discussed the political aspect of this conflict. Romania, together with European countries, is trying through diplomatic channels to stop this war,” he said.
