Addressing the media on Friday, Vaniya Stefanova, Deputy Prosecutor General at the Supreme Prosecutor's Office, said that the Prosecutor's Office's would act uncompromisingly and impartially regarding election crimes. “We will be uncompromising, but also impartial. No one will be spared if sufficient evidence is found that they have committed a crime,” she said. Stefanova spoke during the Interior Ministry's national meeting held in connection with the upcoming snap parliamentary elections.
She noted that efforts to combat crimes against political rights are most effective when there is cooperation and timely exchange of information between institutions.
Stefanova noted that the Prosecutor’s Office will also hold a national meeting in connection with the early elections. She added that since 2014, instructions have been in place regarding speed and urgency in acting on evidence of crimes related to the electoral process.
Addressing police leadership, Stefanova said that the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor’s Office share a serious responsibility to ensure legality, transparency, and public trust in the electoral process. “Above all, this can be achieved through good institutional cooperation,” she said.
Stefanova added that every alert must be treated with due seriousness. If sufficient evidence of a crime exists, pre-trial proceedings should be initiated to bring those responsible to justice - regardless of who they are or which political party they belong to.
