Turkiye’s population increased by 427,224 people in 2025, surpassing 86.9 million, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute. The figures are based on the country’s address registration system.
Men account for 50.02% of the population and women for 49.98%, with men outnumbering women by about 26,700.
The statistics also show a rise in the number of foreigners residing in Turkiye. In 2025, their number increased by 38,968 to reach 1.5 million. Among foreign residents, women slightly outnumber men, accounting for 50.7% compared with 49.3% men.
The data indicate that 67.5% of the population lives in the most densely populated cities. About 15.8% reside in less crowded urban areas, while 16.8% live in rural areas or closer to nature.
In 2025, population decline was recorded in 33 of Turkiye’s 81 provinces, compared with 40 provinces in 2024.
Istanbul continues to grow, with its population reaching 15.7 million - an increase of 52,451 people, and accounting for 18.3% of the country’s population. The second-largest city is the capital Ankara, with 5.9 million residents, followed by Izmir with 4.5 million, Bursa with 3.2 million, and Antalya with nearly 2.8 million.
The smallest population is in Bayburt, with 82,836 residents, followed by Tunceli with about 85,000, and Ardahan with 90,392.
Turkiye’s population also "aged" by five months. In 2025, the average age rose to 34 years and 9 months, up from 34 years and 4 months in 2024. Men remain younger on average than women, with mean ages of 34 years and 2 months for men and 35 years and 2 months for women.
