An operation to dismantle a network producing false documents for citizens of Russia, Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova is underway on Friday in Romania according to local media reports. The network was discovered last summer and an investigation revealed that civil servants from the population registration service and local municipal officials were involved in the scheme. They were accused of bribery, computer fraud, and document forgery.
Prosecutors and border police officers from Iasi and Sighetu Marmatiei searched 73 homes in the Botosani district in northeastern Romania. They also checked 104 addresses, which were found to be fictitious. The most commonly falsified data relates to the person's place of residence or name. Between 2023 and 2024, around 7,000 people received fake identity cards.
