The priorities of Cyprus' Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) and the importance of the current European agenda for Bulgaria will be in the focus of a public discussion at the Central Military Club in Sofia on Thursday.

Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the second time on January 1.

The panel discussion, moderated by Gergana Passy, Chair of PanEuropa Bulgaria, will include Haralambos Kafkarides, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Bulgaria, Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, and Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria.

Representatives of Bulgarian institutions, the diplomatic corps, academia, and civil society will also attend the forum to encourage an informed public debate on the future of the European Union and Bulgaria’s role within it.

The discussion is organized by PanEuropa Bulgaria in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Bulgaria, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Atlantic Reserve Officers’ Union.

Heads of European institutions, leaders and representatives of states and governments, as well as representatives of other organizations and bodies, are among those invited to the opening ceremony of the Cyprus EU Presidency on Thursday at the building of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation in Nicosia, the Cyprus News Agency CNA reported on Wednesday.
