In an interview for Digi24 published on Saturday, Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan commented on the US operation in Venezuela that had Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro extrajudicially abducted. Bolojan reported that his country will be in line with the EU's position on the matter.

The Prime Minister said that similar abductions are conducted every few decades and pointed to the capture of the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega that took place in late 1989.

Bolojan said: "We are closely monitoring developments in South America, in Venezuela, a country whose leadership is not recognized by the international community or by Romania following elections that were deemed to have been rigged. We hope that a formula will be found for a transition to a democratic regime and a solution to avoid conflict." He described the US operation as unusual and relations between the US and Venezuela in recent years as contradictory. He added that the operation was not unexpected considering that the US Navy has been in the Venezuelan coastal zone striking boats suspected of drug trafficking.

Bolojan expressed hope that the people of Venezuela will be able to establish a stable democratic government and that a new attack from the US can be avoided.
