The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a warning for heavy snowfall Thursday, December 25. Yellow and orange code weather alerts will be in force, according to data published on the official NIMH website.

An orange code has been issued for the regions of Vidin, Montana, Gabrovo, Plovdiv, Smolyan, Pazardzhik, Kardzhali and Haskovo. A yellow code for dangerous weather conditions applies to all other regions. Snow accumulation is expected.

According to the NIMH weather forecast, lows in most parts of the country on Christmas will range between minus 1C and 4C. Cooling will continue during the day, with temperatures around 2:00 p.m. expected to range from minus 4C in the northwestern regions to 5–7C in the southeastern parts of the country. In Sofia, temperatures will show little daily variation, between 0C and 2C.

Under yellow and orange codes, people are advised to exercise caution when engaging in outdoor activities, taking into account the possibility of icy conditions. Under an orange code, disruptions to road, rail and air transport are possible, NIMH said.
