The government has approved additional transfers totalling BGN 53 million to the Sofia Municipality budget to finance the expansion of the metro and its security by police, the government information service said on Monday.
Part of the funds are for the construction of the extension of Line 3 of the Sofia Metro from Shipka Str. station to Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd. station with a length of 6 km and including a total of 6 metro stations. The funds will also cover costs for the construction of a metro station next to the Obelya railway station, including a tunnel connection to the Obelya metro depot.
Another part of the funds is intended to cover the cost of metro security by police in 2025.
"The construction of the metro is the capital's largest transport and environmental project, and its benefits in terms of improving living conditions by easing traffic, reducing carbon emissions, noise, and travel time are significant", the government information service emphasized, adding that it is of strategic importance to national security.
