Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Argentina Stoyan Mihaylov and representatives of Bulgarian associations from Buenos Aires, Berisso and Presidencia Roque Saenz Pena welcomed the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii in the Argentine city of Mar del Plata. The ship arrived at the city’s naval base on December 13, 2025, after a month-long Atlantic crossing, the Bulgarian Embassy in Argentina said on the website of the Foreign Ministry.

Ambassador Mihaylov received a report from the ship’s commander Radko Muevski on the transoceanic voyage. The crew and equipment were safe despite a severe storm days earlier, which caused dangerous cargo displacement, the Embassy said.

The official welcome was attended by the head of Argentina’s Southern Naval Command and commander of the Mar del Plata naval base Admiral Marcelo Paternostro, Chair of the Argentina–Bulgaria Friendship Group in the Chamber of Deputies Cecilia Ibanez, and representatives of the Bulgarian community, including Ruzhka Nikolova of the Argentine-Bulgarian Foundation in Buenos Aires, Ivana Kocheff of the Ivan Vazov Bulgarian Cultural Society in Berisso, and Pedro Markoff of the Hristo Botev Bulgarian Cultural Society in Presidencia Roque Saenz Pena.

The research vessel is en route to Antarctica as part of Bulgaria’s 34th Antarctic Expedition and will continue its voyage on December 16 to Bulgaria’s St. Kliment Ohridski Base on Livingston Island. The ship will deliver equipment and supplies and support marine-based scientific projects by Bulgarian and international researchers.

The research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) departed from the port of Varna on November 7, 2025. Its return to Varna is scheduled for mid-April 2026.
