Economic and Social Council (ESC) President Zornitsa Roussinova addressed a discussion on global transformation and Bulgaria’s position in the new economic environment, organized by the Council of Branch Organizations of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI). She argued in her address that Bulgaria needs a new national goal beyond eurozone membership. "After achieving major national objectives that united business, civil society, trade unions, political parties and the government — most notably, Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen and the eurozone — the country must now define its next common goal," said she.

Rusinova said Bulgaria is now a full-fledged member of "Europe’s club of wealthy nations" — integrated into the EU in every sphere, including the labor market, the single market, and the eurozone.

"The big task ahead is how to use this advantage to turn it into economic prosperity and better incomes for people," she added.

Rusinova recalled that in recent years, the ESC has consistently supported government efforts for Bulgaria’s entry into both the Schengen area and the eurozone. The Council has also worked on analyses, opinions, and initiatives addressing the global economic transformation of the country — including the green transition, with positions on nearly all European and national legislation related to energy, as well as recommendations on digitalization.

She emphasized that the adoption of new technologies, innovation, and the use of artificial intelligence will be among Bulgaria’s key competitive advantages. She underscored the importance of green transformation.

“The crucial topic for all of us is investment in education and innovation,” Rusinova said. She added that another priority debate for the ESC will be the next EU budget framework after 2027, which will be of significant importance for Bulgaria’s economy.
