November 3 is celebrated as the International Day for Biosphere Reserves. The date was chosen in 2021 by a decision of the General Conference of UNESCO. Bulgaria has four biosphere parks: Central Balkan, Red Wall, Srebarna, and Uzunbudzhak.
The purpose of biosphere parks is to ensure an balance between a sustainable economic development and environmental protection, the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water said on the occasion. In addition to areas for strict nature protection, buffer and transition zones are also designated where sustainable economic practices based on ecosystem services and on the advantages of proximity to the protected territory are encouraged.
The World Network of Biosphere Reserves includes 784 biosphere parks in a total of 142 countries, including 25 transboundary sites, with more than 250 million people living within their territories. Altogether, these sites protect about 5% of the Earth’s surface and represent examples of harmonious coexistence between people and nature, the Ministry informed.
“Biosphere parks are a living example of how this balance can be sustainably achieved,” said Environment Minister Manol Genov during a workshop on creating and promoting an integrated brand for the Red Wall biosphere park, held in the southern town of Asenovgrad in October.
