An euro information meeting was held in Montana (Northwestern Bulgaria) on Wednesday. The event, which was part of the National Information Campaign for the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, was moderated by Deputy Finance Minister Metodi Metodiev. Also present were Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Lozana Vasileva, Deputy Interior Minister Filip Popov, Montana Mayor Zlatko Zhivkov, as well as experts from various ministries, the National Revenue Agency (NRA), the National Social Security Institute (NSI) and the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC).
Metodiev said that with the sensible fiscal policy pursued since the introduction of the currency board, Bulgaria is prepared to benefit from its membership in the eurozone. He stated that over 98% of the public authority's information systems have already been adapted to work with the euro, and all 236 municipalities have prepared their regulations.
Zhivkov emphasized the importance of the meeting for explaining the benefits of the introduction of the euro and noted that citizens will see in practice that the change will not harm their incomes and that the need for constant currency conversion of contracts will be eliminated.
During the meeting, basic principles and technical details of the process of switching from leva to euro, scheduled for January 1, 2026, were explained. The representatives of the institutions emphasized that prices in retail outlets must be indicated both in leva and euro, using the official fixed exchange rate. It was pointed out that all available bank accounts and electronic funds will be automatically converted into euro at the fixed rate, without the need for any action on the part of consumers.
