Pleven Medical University currently has 1,563 foreign students, with most of the studying in English and 38 of them studying in Bulgarian, the university press office told BTA.

The university emphasized that it was the first medical school in Bulgaria to introduce English-language medical education for international students. Since 1997, it has admitted foreign students in Medicine, and from 2025 it also offers English-language training in Nursing. Nearly 300 international students enroll each year, reflecting growing interest in medical and healthcare studies.

In the 2025–2026 academic year, foreign students come from 53 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australia, with a total of 666 students coming from EU countries. Foreign students are attracted by the university’s affordable tuition, quality education and focus on innovation, including robotic and minimally invasive surgery, genomic and personalized medicine, 3D bioprinting, telemedicine and telesurgery, the university pointed out.

Students also study at advanced simulation facilities, including an endoscopy centre with next-generation simulators and an experimental operating theatre. The university’s resuscitation centre provides practical training in first aid and emergency response. In 2026, the university also opened a virtual anatomy laboratory using augmented and mixed reality technologies. Equipped with 20 high-tech headsets, it provides access to more than 13,000 anatomical structures for interactive learning.
