Construction has begun on Bulgaria’s first high-tech factory for vanadium redox flow batteries in the Zagore Industrial Zone near the village of Elenino in Stara Zagora Municipality, Tsvetelina Borislavova, an investor in the new production, told the media on Thursday.

She said that the investment exceeds EUR 20 million, adding that the technology is new and that there is currently no similar production facility in Europe. According to the investor company, the plant will feature the world’s first automated production line for this type of battery, with the technology designed for long-duration energy storage. It could serve as an alternative to pumped-storage hydropower plants while significantly reducing construction timelines for energy storage systems, the company emphasized.

Zagore Industrial Zone CEO Radloslav Tanev pointed out that the new infrastructure and first manufacturing projects create opportunities for economic growth, attracting investors and generating high-quality jobs in the region. He said that the project has transformed the industrial park near Elenino into an investment-ready site with technical infrastructure, utility networks, and improved transport access. The next development phase will expand the industrial zone onto the site of the former airport near Stara Zagora.
