site.btaPlovdiv Residents Demand Municipal Control of Public Transport
Plovdiv residents protested outside the Municipal Council on Thursday, calling for better public transport in the city. Protest organizer Pavel Nachev stressed that Plovdiv is the only major Bulgarian city that relies entirely on a private transport consortium, leaving the Municipality without control over service quality.
He argued that many of the problems raised by residents stem from the lack of a properly functioning municipal transport system. The protesters presented a petition signed by more than 1,400 residents, which proposes a gradual transition to a fully municipal public transport system.
The petition also calls for electronic ticket validators to be activated, timetables to be updated and followed, and more buses to be added on the busiest routes, Nachev noted. He added that the petition was verified by the national civil registration authority (GRAO) and is legally valid, meaning the Municipal Council must consider it within one month.
The petition was not included on the agenda of the Municipal Council's latest session, with Council Chair Atanas Uzunov announcing that it will instead be discussed on August 3, the final day of the legal deadline for its consideration.
