Improving transport connectivity across Bulgaria will help place all regions on an equal footing and reduce long-standing regional disparities, Regional Development and Public Works Minister Ivan Shishkov said on Thursday. Speaking at a National Meeting of Local and Central Executive Authorities in Sofia, organized by the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB), Shishkov said the government sees infrastructure development as a key tool for achieving more balanced regional growth.
"For years there has been an extreme imbalance in the country's development. Where there is no connectivity, regions begin to lag behind. Where the state has provided connectivity in one form or another, regions begin to develop," the minister said.
Shishkov stressed that improving transport links was a key commitment in the government's election programme. He said the goal was to build the necessary infrastructure within a short period of time so that every region of Bulgaria is connected to all other parts of the country.
"It was for a reason that our election programme included the objective of building this infrastructure in a very short time, so that from every point in Bulgaria, that is, from every region, there is connectivity with all other regions in the country," he said.
The minister acknowledged the financial challenges facing the state but insisted that improving regional connectivity would remain a priority.
"Regardless of the fact that there is currently no money in the state budget, we will do what is most important: ensure connectivity between the regions," Shishkov said.
