The extension of the third metro line in Sofia's Poduyane region is an example of a successfully implemented strategic infrastructure project, and construction of the route towards Slatina region is being carried out on schedule, Metropolitan JSC Director Nikolay Naydenov told journalists during an inspection of the new metro section on Monday.

According to him, the value of the project in Poduyane amounts to EUR 284 million, but more importantly, the funds have been utilised efficiently and on time. “When there are strategic projects, when the Republic of Bulgaria is united around a single goal, there are no former ministers, no former mayors. The previous and the current authorities are working in sync and the funds are being utilised in the best possible way,” Naydenov said.

He emphasized that the project is being implemented under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which, according to him, is among the most restrictive funding mechanisms over the past 20 years and is extremely difficult to implement.

“Metropolitan will remain a symbol for Bulgaria of how such a contract is implemented on time,” he added.

Regarding the metro extension towards Slatina, Naydenov stated that the project is progressing according to schedule and no delays are expected. “Slatina is on track. At the moment we have minimal difficulties, but next week we are making the diversion from Teatralna metro station, so we will be able to proceed within a fully adequate timeframe,” he said.

According to him, the new extension will have similar advantages to the section to Gen. Vladimir Vazov metro station, including the construction of two park-and-ride facilities. “The main goal is related to environmentally friendly transport and getting people out of their cars, so that they can park and then use Sofia’s eco-friendly public transport,” Naydenov added.

In his view, the development of the metro remains a key element of the capital’s transport policy and an important step towards better connectivity and a cleaner urban environment.
