Around 50 tonnes of waste were collected from a green area in the Lyulin 10 borough on the first day of Sofia's spring cleaning campaign, Mayor Vassil Terziev told journalists on Saturday as he launched the annual initiative organized by Sofia Municipality.

The campaign, which continues on Sunday, has attracted 1,500 volunteers who will collect waste at 60 locations across the city. Terziev thanked all participants, saying that keeping Sofia clean depends on active public involvement. He also joined the clean-up activities.

Areas scheduled for cleaning include sites in Ovcha Kupel, Suhata Reka, Studentski Grad, Manastirski Livadi and Mladost boroughs, as well as inter-block spaces and green areas along Zhitnitsa Street and 8th December Boulevard. Mud, sand and residues from winter road treatment are also being cleared from Simeonovsko Shose.

As part of the campaign, WWF Bulgaria is organizing a clean-up of household waste along the banks of the Kakach River in North Park, linked to the global Earth Hour initiative, which marks its 20th anniversary in 2026.

The Sofia Inspectorate is providing bags and logistics for transporting collected waste to designated sites. Authorities reminded participants to separate branches and shrubs from general waste and to dispose of textile waste in specialized containers located at 259 points across the city.
