All roads in the country are safe after the recent snowfall, and there are currently 490 snowplows on the ground, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) said on Friday. The agency emphasized that it has taken all measures to mobilize road cleaning companies, with about 300 snowplows working at night, Miroslav Tsenov, Director of the Situation Centre and Traffic Management Directorate at the RIA, said at a briefing in Sofia.

He reported that there are closed sections on the roads between Oryahovo and Knezha and Ribaritsa-Shipkovo, as well as in the Troyan-Karnare pass, adding that it is normal in the first hours of snowfall and during snow drifts that some roads have to be closed in order to maintain safety.

The RIA has no reports on any negligence on the part of the snow-cleaning companies in any area of the country, Tsenov pointed out.

Inspector Dimitrina Ivanova from the Traffic Police Department of the General Directorate of the National Police called on pedestrians to be careful and drivers to be tolerant. She cited data for the last 24 hours, according to which two people died and 26 were injured in 22 serious accidents across the country.

Dimitrova also noted that over 170,000 vehicles were checked between Christmas and New Year, resulting in approximately 60,000 fines being issued. During the same period, there were 259 serious accidents and 22 fatalities, compared to 248 and 25 respectively in 2024.
