Three Bulgarian inventors were included in Golden Book of the Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria at a formal ceremony in Sofia on Thursday.

The first to be added was Prof. Nikolay Nikolov of the Sofia Technical University, who holds over 20 patents and utility models in robotics, casting technologies, kinetic batteries and personalized medical implants. Nikolov said that in recent years his University has been highly successful in building a research infrastructure and is on a par with the world's leading universities.

The second to be recorded in the book was Prof. Marina Valcheva of the Karnobat Agriculture Institute Karnobat, who has bred 17 new varieties of two-row barley: 14 winter and 3 spring varieties. Valcheva dedicated her registration to the centenary of her Institute and said that the varieties she bred alongside her husband, who is also registered in the Golden Book, are familiar as far away as in northern Moldova and southern Turkiye.

The third one registered on Thursday was Assist. Prof. Dr Dimitar Kolev, a renowned scientist who patented installations in power engineering, waste recovery, biotechnology, and industrial processes. His most notable achievements include patents for drying installations, heat exchangers for flue gas recovery, methods and installations for the production of ethyl alcohol from cereals, car tyres pyrolysis, and municipal waste treatment. He dedicated his registration to his father, who is also included in the Book.

The Golden Book, started in 1981 as a tie-in with the 1300th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian State, is opened once a year for the inclusion of the most outstanding Bulgarian discoverers and inventors as an acknowledgement of their scientific and creative achievements. Nominations for registration are made by universities, economic, academic and public organizations. More than 160 persons have been listed in the Book since its establishment.
