Dedication and discipline are the qualities that are needed to be successful, says Oscar-nominated Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova in an interview with producer Andrey Arnaudov. A video of their conversation was screened during the Bulgaria across Five Oceans career forum of the Bulgaria Wants You platform, held in Sofia on Saturday.

She notes that in order to succeed in what one does, one has to be dedicated, to burn in what one does, to be persistent and with good discipline, to be prepared and to give one's best. "I say this judging by the fact that there is always one person behind you who is more prepared or wants your spot more. So if you are given a chance, you have to prove yourself, try harder and build on it," Bakalova adds.

According to her, the general difference between her profession in the USA and in Bulgaria is that there is more competition, there are a lot of people and you have to be prepared.

The Bulgarian actress also told Arnaudov more about her dreams, which were related to the acting profession. "When I was 12 years old, I used to draw in my notebooks the sign of Hollywood, the palm trees, and quote to myself: 'One day I will be a great movie star.' Then I grew up and said to myself: 'Hollywood is far away, maybe it won't happen,' and I devoted myself entirely to theatre. I stopped imagining Hollywood somewhere in sixth or seventh grade, then I indulged in the dream of Denmark, of Copenhagen, I wanted to do Danish cinema," she points out.

Bakalova adds that Denmark was a dream in terms of filmmaking, but she ended up getting her education at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) in Sofia.

Asked by Arnaudov why more Bulgarians are coming home to Bulgaria than going abroad, the actress says that she thinks this country is becoming more global, more open to learning new things and accepting new cultures. There is a culture of exchange between European countries, including Bulgaria. Things are developing in a positive way, she adds.

At the end, Bakalova says that her dream is that her loved ones are healthy, that she is healthy, that they are happy. Happiness is a common denominator for success, love, fulfillment, inspiration and luck, she notes.
