Bulgarian Antarctic scientists met with a delegation from the Chinese Antarctic Center for Surveying and Mapping at the National Centre for Polar Studies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski on Friday. The meeting was attended by Chinese scholars including Prof. Ai Songtao, Prof. Fei Li, and Assoc. Prof. Feng Xiao.  Prof. Christo Pimpirev, Prof. Lyubomir Ivanov, Assoc. Prof Asparuh Kamburov and Dragomir Mateev were in attendance from the Bulgarian side.

Pimpirev is the founder and chairman of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, as well as the director of the National Centre for Polar Studies. He is also head of the Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions.

This is the first step towards real cooperation in the study of Antarctica between scientists from both countries, Pimpirev noted. Specific areas for joint projects were identified - in the East Antarctic ice sheet, where there are two Chinese stations, at the Bulgarian station on Livingstone Island, as well as oceanographic studies in the Southern Ocean through the Bulgarian research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii, explained Pimpirev.
