Varna Marks Five Years Since RSV 421 Joined Naval Academy

A formal ceremony in Varna on Friday marked the fifth anniversary of the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) joining the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy.

Congratulatory messages from President Iliana Iotova, Prime Minister Rumen Radev, and Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov highlighted the vessel's importance. Iotova praised RSV 421 for enabling Bulgaria's Antarctic missions and supporting world-class scientific research across multiple disciplines. Radev described the ship as a symbol of successful cooperation between education, science, and government, expressing confidence it would continue to inspire research and young scientists. Stoyanov called the vessel a strategic platform for naval officer training, scientific research, and representing Bulgaria in Antarctica, emphasizing its role in strengthening the country's international standing and scientific capabilities.

RSV 421 has significantly expanded scientific research in Antarctica, the ship's Commanding Officer Radko Muevski stressed. He said the ship has enhanced both the quality and scope of research over the past four Antarctic expeditions by enabling Bulgarian and international scientists to reach remote islands and peninsulas far beyond the areas accessible by boats, sledges or on foot.

Bulgaria's St. Kliment Ohridski Antarctic Base on Livingston Island has been completely transformed thanks to RSV 421, Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy Rector Flotilla Admiral Prof. Kalin Kalinov said. He also noted in his address that the idea of including a vessel in the Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions had first emerged in 2015.

The Bulgarian naval research vessel has strengthened Bulgaria's status as a maritime nation, sailing under the Bulgarian naval flag rather than a foreign one, said Prof. Christo Pimpirev, head of Bulgaria's Antarctic expeditions. "The ocean is calling us, and through the four expeditions of Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421), we have proven we are worthy of it", Pimpirev emphasized.

Sofia University Rector Eliza Stefanova emphasized that the Bulgarian research vessel has also transformed education over the five years it has been part of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy. She recalled that the vessel had become a reality through the joint efforts of Sofia University, the Naval Academy, Bulgaria’s scientific community and the Ministry of Education and Science. She credited the ship and its crew with bringing education to a new level in recent years.

Bulgaria needs long-term strategic priorities, and Antarctica is one of them, Captain Nikolay Danailov, commanding officer of RSV 421 during its first two Antarctic expeditions, told BTA. He said that he was proud that the ship's maiden expedition in 2022–2023 laid the foundation for a national strategic capability that has grown through four missions, with a fifth mission planned. "These are strategic goals that our children and grandchildren will continue to build on," he emphasized.

In 2021, the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, together with the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, acquired the research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421). The ship supports Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions, conducts research under the National Polar Research Programme, and serves as part of the Naval Academy. On 27 December 2022, RSV 421 departed on its maiden Antarctic mission as part of the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition.

Since 2022, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) has operated a National Press Club on board the vessel, and in February 2024 it opened another at the Bulgarian Antarctic Base St. Kliment Ohridski on Livingston Island.
