The European Commission (EC) hopes that the newly proposed sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine will be adopted as soon as possible, as now is the moment to continue putting pressure on Russia, EC Deputy Chief Spokesperson Arianna Podesta told a news conference here on Wednesday. She was taking a question related to media claims that Bulgaria opposes part of the proposal.

"We will not be commenting on discussions that are ongoing at this time on the proposal we put forward last week. We are talking with Member States and we will continue working constructively with them, hoping to adopt as soon as possible the package of sanctions against Russia," the EC spokesperson said.

Last week, the EC proposed broader economic sanctions against Russia and a ban on entry in the EU of everyone who has served in the Russian Armed Forces since the start of the war.
