FILE - Joseph Ignatius Gilbert, 1840-1924, worked for the Associated Press from the early 1860s until his retirement. He died in Philadelphia. He was present at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on Nov. 19, 1863 on behalf of the Associated Press, where he took down in shorthand Edward Everett's oration and the short address of President Abraham Lincoln. He later wrote a short memoir describing his meetings with Lincoln, clearly the highlights of his long life as a journalist. Kennedy was dismissed by the AP after he bypassed military censors and was the first journalist to file a firsthand account of German officials surrounding unconditionally to Allied commanders at a former schoolhouse in Reims, France, signaling that World War II was over. Sixty-seven years later, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Curley said that Kennedy was right to stand up to the censors, and should have been commended, not fired.
