Bulgarian Foreign Ministry: Country to Joint
International Efforts for Humanitarian Aid to
Civilians in Afghanistan

Sofia, August 17 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry follows with concern the grave situation in Afghanistan, the Ministry said in a press release on August 16.

Bulgaria joins the call of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres reminding all parties in the conflict of their legal and moral obligation to take all measures to protect civilians.

Bulgaria shares the concern of the international community about the human rights restrictions imposed by the Taliban, in particular to women and journalists.

This country will join in the international efforts in rendering life-saving humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Afghanistan.

Bulgaria supports the US-initiated multinational statement which stresses the need to secure, and calls on all parties, to respect and facilitate the safe and orderly departure of foreign nationals and Afghans who wish to leave the country. Afghans and international citizens who wish to depart must be allowed to do so. Roads, airports and border crossing must remain open, and calm must be maintained, the statement reads.

Bulgaria is considering with due attention the calls to accept temporarily on its territory Afghanistan nationals who worked for NATO, the EU, foreign diplomatic missions and organizations in Afghanistan.

Bulgarian caretaker Foreign Minister Svetlan Stoev will represent this country at an extraordinary video conference later on Tuesday of EU foreign affairs ministers who will take stock of the situation in Afghanistan. RY/ZH//
