PM Yanev: COVID-19
Infections in Schools
Decrease

Sofia, November 12 (BTA) - Caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev Friday said the purpose of COVID testing at school is to ensure a safer environment. Data provided by the Education Ministry show that school infections are decreasing, said Yanev, who was answering questions from the public on Facebook.

When the number of infected children is low enough and the epidemic situation nationwide has been curbed sufficiently, testing at school will end, said Yanev. Both the requirement for green certificates and COVID-19 testing of school students are temporary measures aimed to reduce morbidity and the burden on the health care system, he said.

Meanwhile, the Education and Science Ministry said that non-invasive test kits are already available for all first- to fourth-graders. In-person classes can resume if 50 per cent of parents in each class give their consent for testing of their children twice a week. This was first done on November 10.

A further 121,000 test kits have been delivered to the last 11 regions which had not received the required number before, and 30,979 students in those regions will return to school.

Total lockdown is damaging to the economy, Yanev said on Facebook. If it is imposed, some businesses may never reopen. Lockdown is a last-resort measure worldwide, he stressed.

"The caretaker cabinet considers a shorter or longer lockdown the worse option. The softer option is to tighten control, which helps to protect people," Yanev said, referring to the requirement for green passes.

"The measures we are taking are already working. In the last couple of days those recovered from COVID outnumber the new infections. Let's be realistic rather than give in to emotions," Yanev said.

There is no need for a lockdown, Health Minister Stoycho Katsarov told reporters. The restrictions and the green certificate have produced results and COVID infections are on the decrease.

Katsarov thanked people and the media who were part of the nationwide effort to handle the epidemic.

The Health Minister said he would propose an extension of the epidemic emergency by four to six months. He added that Bulgaria would not be able to cope with the situation caused by the coronavirus earlier. MY/DD
