First 12 Omicron
Cases in Bulgaria
Confirmed

Sofia, January 2 (BTA) - Bulgaria has confirmed its first 12 cases of the Omicron COVID variant, Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev told reporters on Sunday. This variant can be expected to spread faster and become dominant, he said.

Eleven of those cases are from the capital Sofia and one is from Sofia Region. They all have mild symptoms. The infected people range from children to pensioners.

Only one of them has been abroad.

Nine of those infected are men and three are women. Seven are not vaccinated and five are fully vaccinated. None of them has received three vaccine doses.

Changes in the COVID restrictions will be discussed on Tuesday, the first working day after the holidays. "We will see what restrictions are imposed by other countries so as to bring Bulgaria into line," said Kunchev.

New cases may double every 48 hours, said Kunchev. Some sectors may see up to 15 or 20 per cent of their staff infected.

He recalled that the government will pay a one-off incentive of 75 leva to all pensioners who get their first vaccine dose, become fully vaccinated or get a booster jab until June 30. DD
