“Europe must wake up from its geopolitical slumber; Europe is on the brink of decline,” said Mateusz Morawiecki, President of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party during a forum of the leadership in Sofia on Thursday.
“The discussions here in Sofia are fundamental in seeking a path toward reducing bureaucracy in Europe, and addressing all the mistakes and failures related to the Green Deal and the Migration Pact,” Morawiecki said.
According to him, the European Union has geopolitical competitors like China and the United States, and it is clear that Europe must find a different way to respond to today's challenges.
“I hope the European Commission will finally hear our voice, because this is for the good of the EU,” he added.
In response to a question about whether Russia feels threatened by NATO moving closer to its borders, the former Polish Prime Minister replied that the EU is a very peaceful organization, and that its enlargement toward the Western Balkans is something very natural.
“If we don’t expand here, then Turkiye, China, Islamic states, and Russia will be very interested in expanding their influence in the Western Balkans,” he warned.
Asked when the EU enlargement process should be completed, Morawiecki said the process for the Western Balkans should be concluded as quickly as possible.
“The EU promised these countries EU membership two decades ago, but it didn’t happen. That’s why the EU must show enough courage and complete this enlargement as soon as possible. If we want a stable EU, we must finalize enlargement with the Western Balkan countries,” he stated.
Mateusz Morawiecki is a Polish statesman, economist, and a member of the Law and Justice Party. He served as Prime Minister of Poland from 2017 to 2023, and succeeded Giorgia Meloni as leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party.
He is currently a member of the Polish parliament and one of the leading figures of the European conservative movement.
