No changes in migration flows have been observed so far, but the European Commission (EC) continues to monitor the situation closely, an EC spokesperson said Tuesday at a press conference in response to questions related to events in the Middle East.

He specified that there are currently no discussions about activating the part of European legislation related to joint defense following the air strikes on a British military base in Cyprus. According to him, if this becomes necessary, a joint political and legal assessment by EU countries will first be required at the request of the country affected by the military attack. It appears that Cyprus was not the target of these strikes, the spokesman noted.

The entire Middle East is losing out from the situation today, and the EU is striving to maintain security and stability in the region, he said. The EC will continue to use all diplomatic means to reduce tensions and achieve a lasting solution, as well as to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, the spokesperson added. The Commission remains in close contact with the US and calls on Tehran to truly change its behavior, the spokesperson said.
