The 10th European Week of Sport #BeActive kicked off at the Asics Arena in Sofia on Tuesday. Hundreds of children and young people took part in the sports fair, which will continue on Wednesday. More than 30 sports federations and clubs showcased their activities through demonstrations and information stands.

“It is gratifying that for a decade Bulgaria has been part of this large-scale European initiative that inspires millions to lead more active and healthier lives. Thanks to this campaign, thousands of Bulgarian children and young people have already discovered the joy and benefits of sport through #BeActive. I am confident that together we will make the European Week of Sport a true celebration of active living,” said Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Petar Mladenov, who launched the campaign.

The event was also attended by Deputy Minister Dimitar Georgiev and many successful Bulgarian athletes, including footballer Blagoy Georgiev, Olympic bronze medallist in rhythmic gymnastics Reneta Kamberova, world boxing vice-champion Rami Kiwan, volleyball player Teodor Salparov, world and European wrestling champion Ivo Angelov, world number three in sabre fencing Yoana Ilieva, European judo vice-champion Ivelina Ilieva, young swimming talent Petar Mitsin, and Paralympian Stela Eneva.

European Week of Sport is an initiative of the European Commission aimed at promoting sport and physical activity among EU citizens. The Ministry of Youth and Sports serves as the national coordinator for Bulgaria, with the project supported by funding from the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
