Thirty-five new projects under the Strategic Plan for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas 2023–2027 are expected to be launched by the end of the year, Irrigation Systems EAD Executive Director Snezhina Dineva said on Friday at the inauguration of a reconstructed section of the M-1 main canal, part of the Trakiets Irrigation Network in the Haskovo Region.

Dineva said that the implementation of the new projects is expected to enable the irrigation of an additional 40,000 hectares of agricultural land. She noted that 24 projects have already been completed nationwide, including the rehabilitation of main irrigation and trunk canals, pumping stations and other facilities. As a result, water supply has been secured for an extra 20,000 ha. During the 2025 irrigation season, the company supplied water to a total of 39,000 hectares of farmland.

The Executive Director expressed special thanks to Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, and the Council of Ministers for their support, as well as to the designers, engineers and employees of Irrigation Systems who worked on the 24 completed projects under the Rural Development Programme.

The new facility was inaugurated by Zhelyazkov, European Commissioner for Agriculture Christophe Hansen, Agriculture Minister Georgi Tahov.

In 2024, the Agriculture Ministry announced that the reconstruction would increase the irrigated area in Haskovo Region to 3,907 hectares. The upgrade aims to reduce water loss and improve the canal’s flow capacity. The M-1 canal is 47.515 kilometres long. The project will enable the supply of larger volumes of water, expanding irrigated areas and helping to prevent flooding of adjacent farmland. It will also improve water distribution and canal operation, while making maintenance and cleaning more efficient.
