Turkish Ambassador to Bulgaria Mehmet Sait Uyanik, who spoke at the Fourth Balkan Business Forum here on Saturday, said that the bilateral relation between Bulgaria and Turkiye have a great potential.
The Ambassador said that the two countries have ties with big dimensions and continue trying to expand them. He added that Bulgaria is a natural ally of Turkiye, as the interests of the two countries overlap in numerous areas.
Uyanik quoted data according to which trade between the two countries is growing and has reached nearly USD 8 billion. Turkiye's total trade with the Balkans amounts to USD 37 billion, of which nearly 25% is with Bulgaria.
The diplomat noted Bulgaria's role as the last stop for travelling Turkish citizens before they reach their homeland. He pointed out that 12 million passengers have passed through the border crossings connecting the two countries. Uyanik also commented on the importance of increasing the capacity of the crossing points between the two countries, especially at Kapitan Andreevo and Lesovo. He was hopeful that these check points will be modernized soon.
The Ambassador reported that more than 3 million Bulgarians chose Turkiye as a tourism destination in 2024, while 2 million Turkish tourists visited Bulgaria. He was confident that Bulgaria will see an increase, once the visa problems are solved.
Representatives from Bulgaria, Turkiye, Romania, Greece, Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia are taking part in this year's forum, which is organized in partnership with the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey – DEIK / Turkey-Bulgaria Business Council, Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency, InvestBulgaria Agency, Commercial Section of the Turkish Embassy in Sofia, Bulgarian-Romanian Chamber of Commerce, Bulgarian-Albanian Chamber of Commerce, Bulgarian-Macedonian Chamber of Commerce.
