Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh held a working meeting with the Chairman of the Board of the Bulgarian Blue Flag Movement, Stanimir Georgiev, who acquainted the minister with the organization’s national programs in the field of environmental education, the Tourism Ministry said on Thursday. The focus of the talks between the two was the initiative for environmentally friendly management of beaches and marinas, as well as sustainable methods and new technologies in the most dynamically developing sector of the Bulgarian economy, the tourist sector.
Within the framework of the meeting the Green Key certificate program was also among the topics of discussion. The program distinguishes hotels and restaurants with a clear commitment to sustainable practices and environmental protection. To date, eight hotels and one restaurant in Bulgaria have this internationally recognized environmental certificate. “Sustainable tourism is not just a modern trend, but a strategic commitment. The increasing number of sites certified with a Blue Flag and Green Key is a clear sign that the sector is aware of their importance internationally. Bulgarian business will thus attract more and more environmentally responsible tourists, but also investments,” Minister Borshosh said. The two programs play a key role in establishing Bulgaria as an attractive destination for environmentally conscious tourists.
In 2025, 22 Bulgarian beaches and a yacht port meet the strict requirements of the international Blue Flag certification program. The organization’s data indicate that the certification of beaches in Bulgaria is still at an early stage, which provides opportunities for the development of higher environmental and tourist standards on the Black Sea coast.
“Certified beaches and tourist sites not only enhance the image of Bulgaria as a sustainable destination but also introduce real quality standards that preserve nature and create better conditions for tourism,” the minister added.
