Transport Minister Hristo Aleksiev has ordered an inspection of the May 26 situation, when passengers on a Wiz Air flight from Abu Dhabi to Sofia refused to disembark at Varna airport after their flight was diverted, his Ministry said on Monday.

"First of all, I want the inspectors to clarify whether the rights of the passengers have been respected," Aleksiev was quoted as saying by the ministry. He added that if a violation is found, the necessary legal actions will be taken.

The airline had operated a flight from Abu Dhabi to Sofia. Due to flight delays, the aircraft was diverted to Varna airport, as planned repairs were being carried out at Sofia airport overnight and the runway was closed for landing and take-off, the Transport Ministry explained.

According to the Bulgarian National Radio, the operator was informed that it would not be able to land, but passengers were told minutes before landing. There were buses at the airport to take everyone to Sofia. However, some of them refused to get off the plane.

A video of the situation circulated on social media, showing how passengers complain of their violated rights and threaten to sue the airline.

Varna Airport is part of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management JSC. The airport opened its active summer season on May 5.
