Most vegetables, fruits and staple food products registered price decreases on Bulgarian wholesale markets this week, according to the weekly bulletin of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets published here on Sunday.
The Market Price Index, which tracks wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, decreased by 1.68% to 2.395 points, compared with 2.436 points a week earlier. The base level of the index, 1.000 points, dates back to 2005.
The sharpest decreases were reported for tomatoes, down by 22.79% to EUR 1.26 per kg, and courgettes, down by 21.52% to EUR 0.70 per kg. Pepper prices also declined, with red peppers down by 9.02% to EUR 2.30 per kg and green peppers down by 5.13% to EUR 1.96 per kg. Prices also fell for potatoes, by 7.19% to EUR 0.62 per kg; lettuce, by 6.01% to EUR 0.72 per piece; cucumbers, by 4.15% to EUR 1.11 per kg; and dry onions, by 2.69% to EUR 0.65 per kg.
Among vegetables, only carrots and cabbage rose in price, by 11.37% to EUR 0.96 per kg and by 5.07% to EUR 0.58 per kg, respectively.
Among fruits, apple prices dropped sharply, by 14.67% to EUR 1.07 per kg, and cherry prices fell by 13.48% to EUR 2.17 per kg. Lemons were also cheaper, down by 5.58% to EUR 2.47 per kg. By contrast, strawberries rose significantly in price, by 14.77%, and traded at EUR 3 per kg.
Cow’s cheese decreased by 1.35% to EUR 5.97 per kg, while Vitosha-type yellow cheese edged down by 0.49% to EUR 9.39 per kg. Yoghurt with 3% and more fat content was also cheaper than last week, down by 2.74% to EUR 0.71 per 400 g cup, and fresh milk fell by 0.88% to EUR 1.13 per litre. Butter in 125 g packets declined by 2.82% and traded at EUR 1.38 per unit.
Frozen chicken meat rose by 0.65% to EUR 3.70 per kg, while size M eggs increased by 1.94% to EUR 0.21 per piece wholesale.
The price of rice fell by 0.6% to EUR 1.67 per kg, while Type 500 flour edged down by 0.59% to EUR 0.67 per kg. Sunflower oil was also cheaper, dropping by 3.08% to EUR 1.70 per litre. Dry beans rose by 4.32% to EUR 2.22 per kg, lentils by 1.35% to EUR 2.10 per kg, and sugar by 1.37% to EUR 0.89 per kg.
