A roundtable discussion on the low-carbon industry as a driver of growth and competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy, organized by the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD) took place on Thursday in Sofia.

Caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov, along with representatives of institutions, business, and the energy sector, participated in the forum. The event was opened by the CSD Energy and Climate Programme Director Martin Vladimirov, who stressed that the current energy crisis can be used as an opportunity to accelerate the transition to more sustainable solutions and modernize industry.

Tsvetomir Nikolov, an analyst with the Energy and Climate Programme, added that Bulgarian industries and consumers remain particularly vulnerable to high and volatile prices of fossil fuels and carbon emissions, with the economy continuing to be heavily dependent on them. He noted that a small number of industrial subsectors account for the majority of energy consumption and emissions, which creates significant risks but also provides opportunities for targeted and highly efficient investments.

Nikolov explained that different energy consumption scenarios examine the effects of high energy and carbon prices, the introduction of new emissions trading mechanisms, and the potential reduction in fossil fuel use. According to him, the transition to higher levels of electrification and the use of natural gas as a transitional solution are key to the decarbonization of Bulgarian industry.

He emphasized that successful transformation requires targeted policies, investment in innovative and high-tech processes, and active use of European funds to support the competitiveness of energy-intensive sectors.

The event provided a platform to discuss the challenges facing industry, the necessary investments, and strategic measures to ensure sustainable and low-carbon growth of the Bulgarian economy.
