site.btaATMs Begin to Dispense Euro Banknotes
Euro banknotes can now be withdrawn from ATMs of a number of banks in Sofia, a BTA check has shown.
As of 00.00 am on Thursday, euro banknotes and euro coins have officially entered in circulation in Bulgaria, after the country became the 21st member of the euro area. Until the end of January, the lev will remain a legal means of payment in Bulgaria, and as of February 1 the euro will be the sole currency, under the Act on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria.
ATMs of UniCredit Bulbank, DSK Bank, and Central Cooperative Bank (CCB), located in central areas of the capital, are operating without disruption and allow withdrawals in euros.
ATMs of United Bulgarian Bank (UBB) and Investbank are also dispensing the requested amounts in the single European currency.
All banks in the country had warned of a technical interruption to reconfigure their systems for operating in euros, which mainly covered the period from 9.00 pm on December 31 to 1 am after midnight on January 1.
After the completion of the technical reconfiguration, cash withdrawals from ATMs will be available only in euros.
Throughout 2026, citizens will be able to exchange leva for euros at commercial banks with no fees or commissions until mid-year. Afterwards, commercial banks may apply fees for currency conversion. During 2026, citizens will also be able to exchange leva at branches of Bulgarian Posts, while the Bulgarian National Bank will exchange leva for euros free of charge and without a time limit.
